What’s on the bench – following the story of Wendy’s rings – step 3: working an ingot!
The black strip in this photo contains Wendy’s 18ct yellow gold – doesn’t look like much just now.
It has been melted into an ingot (a blob of gold) and then I’m starting to work it into a strip of square wire.
This process is done by hand using a goldsmiths ‘rolling mill’, where I basically ‘hand squeeze’ the metal through a series of square shaped grooves. It can take a couple of hours to get something I can work with & it’s a pretty physical process – means I get to build up my arm muscles!!
